South African Music Royalty Ringo Madlingozi Cements His Musical Legacy Alongside Sons Phila Madlingozi And ThandaMusic On New EP “UTHANDO NGUNDOQO [Love Is Essential]”

South African soul icon Ringo Madlingozi continues to affirm his place among the country’s most distinguished musical voices with the release of UTHANDO NGUNDOQO [Love Is Essential], a deeply personal two-track EP alongside his sons, Phila Madlingozi and ThandaMusic. Four decades into a career defined by a distinctive sound, powerful storytelling and an enduring connection with audiences, Ringo brings his musical legacy into a new generation through a project shaped by family, love, loss and the lasting influence of motherhood. The collaboration connects the unmistakable soul expression that has defined his career with the contemporary perspectives of his sons, creating a shared musical statement that speaks to both their individual journeys and the bond they share.

Since first capturing national attention in 1986, when his group Peto won the Shell Road to Fame competition, Ringo has built a career defined by an unmistakable musical identity and an ability to connect with audiences through his storytelling. His debut solo album, Vukani, sold tens of thousands of copies, introducing audiences to a distinctive sound shaped by contemporary African pop, traditional Xhosa rhythms and the expressive influence of Xhosa guitar. Over the years, his contribution has earned him multiple South African Music Awards and Kora Awards, including recognition as Best Male Artist in Southern Africa and on the African continent. Four decades later, his commitment to music and cultural expression remains central to his artistic journey.

That legacy takes on a new dimension with UTHANDO NGUNDOQO [Love Is Essential], bringing Ringo together with Phila and ThandaMusic for a project that connects their individual musical perspectives through a shared family experience. The EP takes its name from “UTHANDO NGUNDOQO” [LOVE IS ESSENTIAL], a powerful expression of the project’s central message, that love remains fundamental to family, healing and human connection. Bringing Ringo’s celebrated soul sensibilities into conversation with the contemporary approaches of his sons, the title track reinforces the values at the heart of the collaboration.

The project follows the release of “INTLIZIYO YAM” [MY HEART], a deeply moving song that has already resonated with listeners and paved the way for the EP. Written following the passing of Ringo’s mother earlier this year, the song explores the profound experience of losing a parent while celebrating the memories, wisdom and strength that remain. Its significance extends across the Madlingozi family, as both Phila and ThandaMusic have also experienced the loss of their own mothers. What begins as an expression of individual grief develops into a shared tribute to the women whose love, guidance and influence continue to shape their lives.

“This project comes from a very real place in our family’s journey”, says Ringo Madlingozi. “Each of us has experienced the loss of a mother. That pain never leaves you, but neither does the love. These songs are about carrying that love with us, honouring the women who raised us, and recognising that love remains the foundation of everything we do”.

For an artist whose career has been shaped by a strong connection to his language, culture and musical heritage, bringing his sons into this project carries significance beyond the collaboration itself. It places Ringo’s musical legacy in conversation with a younger generation, creating space for that influence to evolve while preserving the storytelling and emotional expression that have defined his work. It is a continuation of a musical journey that has crossed generations, now told through the voices of a family bound by both music and experience.

Across its two tracks, UTHANDO NGUNDOQO [Love Is Essential] moves between remembrance and affirmation. While “INTLIZIYO YAM” [MY HEART] honours the mothers whose presence continues to be felt through the lives they shaped, “UTHANDO NGUNDOQO” [LOVE IS ESSENTIAL] reinforces the importance of love in sustaining the connections that make us who we are. Together, the songs capture the emotional depth of the project while offering a reminder that the influence of those we love can endure long after they are gone.
