Mixed Reactions after Idols SA announced to be Canned
After eighteen seasons since its premiere in 2002, South Africa’s biggest music talent search competition Idols SA will be coming to an end this end. Season 19 will be the show’s swansong, with online auditions set the kick off this coming Sunday the 12th of February 2023.
Throughout its record-breaking run, Idols SA has given rise to prominent stars, such as SAMA-winning vocalists Shekhinah and Amanda Black, with other contestants making names for themselves within the entertainment space such as Khaya Mthethwa and Mmatema.
Upon the announcement, South Africans took to Twitter to share their feelings about the cancellation of the Sunday evening spectacle, with the reception being mixed under the hashtag #IdolsSA.
Some followers were critical of the show, panning it as being ineffective. A user tweeting under @RoryPetzer posted: “Idols SA is coming to an end. Nineteen seasons of giving people who can’t sing false hope and a Standard Bank account.”
