‘IGAGU’, which refers to the individual who stands out from a group of talented singers or dancers, is a mixture of Afro-pop, Afro-house and Afro-tech musical mastery that effortlessly highlights Azana’s vocal talent and creative diversity.
The tireless 10,000 hours of refining and honing the craft of the Chesterville-born singer and her signature alto has resulted in a carefully curated album which marries a score of genres with cohesive seamlessness curated into a thread of diverse soundscapes.
Azana’s approach to singing and songwriting was shaped by musicians she grew up idolising, from Beyoncé to Nina Simone and venerable South African singers Camagwini, Simphiwe Dana and Letta Mbulu. In IGAGU, there is a subtle continuation of the subject matter range of love, spirituality and the pursuit of success covered in her critically acclaimed “Ingoma”, with singles like “Never Be The Same” reflecting on the upper echelon, she finds herself in ever since breaking into the industry and becoming a household name in her own right.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the album title and the choral nature of its sonic narrative, Azana shares: “When we were growing up, there would always be someone in a choir setting who would always sing first, and then others join them. In my language, IsiZulu, this individual is called IGAGU. Because of the love I have for music and the arts, I have always stood out in a group of singers and creatives; I participated in music my whole school career, and as I grew older, I gained the confidence to direct musically and lead in the choirs I was in and became IGAGU!”
As the season for summer weddings kicks off, beloved Azana music lovers are in for a music playlist treat that will colour all their special occasion memories.
