Restaurant Review: Moo Moo Mall of Africa – A Meat Lover’s Haven

Located amongst other restaurants just outside one of the entrances of high foot traffic Mall of Africa, Moo Moo is well situated to meet the needs of destination diners as well as tired or hungry shoppers. There is a play area and small amusement park a stone’s throw from the restaurant; and a Bounce located by the opposite entrance of the mall one floor up. Meaning there is enough to keep children occupied should diners want some quiet time whilst they eat.

Venue design and ambience

True to its name, Moo Moo is a modern looking restaurant that has a strong cow theme infused with eye catching bright colours. The dining tables have white patches like a dairy cow; the menu laden with moosive cow related satiric misspelling. Well known, mostly pop, songs play at just the right volume in the background. All this contributing to a lively, jovial, and yet relaxed, atmosphere.

Menu and affordability

Moo Moo is primarily a steakhouse but ‘with a difference’, aiming to fill what it has identified as the ‘meat-lovers gap.’This difference is expressed through its brand personality. The menu is fairly varied, offering meals that will satisfy most meat eaters. My espetada, served on a skewer, was excellent – made at the precise doneness I ordered and seasoned well enough that I did not feel the need to add any salt or pepper to taste it. They have a solid selection of sides to go with the meals, including restaurant menu rare sweet potato chips. The main course steak prices are in a range of R135 to R285. To be able to get a AAA grade 500 gram T-bone for R255 is very good value for money. Moo Moo offers a solid variety of wines and other drinks to go with meals.

Notably they have a daily ‘wine hour’ between 16:30 and 17:30 where patrons get a complimentary wine with each wine purchased. All wines on the menu are available as a single glass purchase, with the price of four glasses exactly equaling the price of one bottle. There are also bottles of wine not included in the menu but available for purchase at their Moo Moo Wall of Wine (these are not available as single glass orders.)

Quality of service

The food arrived quickly. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Sihle my waiter was wonderful. The venue was also very clean and hygienic.

Interesting fact

Moo Moo’s in-house sauces (hot peri peri, bbq mustard, and smokey bbq) are available for sale. Furthermore, the caps and aprons worn by the waiters are also available for sale.

Concluding comments

Overall, I had a great dining experience at Moo Moo, Mall of Africa. The food excellent, service good, venue full of personality. I’ll have to return on a Sunday sometime for their live music by local performers between 16:00 and 18:00, which I’m told is a must experience.
