PatricKxxLee shift gears with Room 37 to show versatility of his artistry

PatricKxxLee’s Room 37 project is not only an expression of collaboration but the beginning of uniting artists musically on his turf to produce musical projects that showcases his expansive mind.

This 14 track project, that he dubs as a collaborative tape (and not an album), came together within 6 months and features artists such as likes of KashCPT, Solo Sae, PsychoYP, Kayla, Burningforestboy, Blxckie, BabyDai, Sjava and KindlyNxsh – all of whom he reckons add a special touch with their varying talents on the rather lighthearted ‘tape’ that is contrary to what PatricKxxLee has come to be known for.

The Zambian-born Johannesburg-raised rapper, singer and producer first burst onto the scene with his debut studio album ‘Diary Of An Arsonist’, and admits that until now collaborations were not a frequent occurrence with his past projects. Now, stepping into this realm of artistry has required a lot of experimentation from his end which allows him to ultimately achieve the bigger goal of releasing all types of music.

Showcasing his versatility as an artist.

Picking these talented individuals to feature coincided with timing, wHICH PatricKxxLee said these individuals became available to him as soon as he was ready to work on a fused project like this one. And although he had already completed a full album, releasing this project became more pertinent.

“The project name has a significant meaning. 37 is my name in numerology and Patrick can be translated to the number 3. The whole combination of my first, middle and last name is translated into seven. Three represents creativity and seven represents the search for truth and knowledge. With the word room, I wanted to create a portal into my room, my dimension, my head,” he said.

“I think the most important thing for me in creating this project was that I wanted my art to be genuine. It required me to look within myself and therefore talk about what was happening in my life right then. My hopes for this project is that it opens more doors for other collaborations and for people to see the potential that such projects can have. I also hope that we can adopt new fusions and also open up my supporter’s minds to me not solely being one dimension, which at times can be deemed as dark and emo,” he said.

This brave leap of stepping out of his own comfort speaks to his personal belief that an artist can only become great once they jump out of their own box and stop saying no to any other genre that is out there.

The production of the tape started right after PatricKxxLee’s trip to the US last year. He came back at the end of November and conceptualised the tape and started recording Room 37 in December 2022. The significance of his stay in Los Angeles is that he experienced what it’s like when a lot of artists and producers collaborate in the studio together, and he wanted to give that collaboration approach a shot for this project, resulting in only four out of 14 songs on Room 37 not having features.

The making of the entire project brought with it different emotions, which included a lot of opening up within himself, tears and a deeper understanding of self.

And out of all his features on Room 37, working with Kayla on Love me Now brought with it a lot of surprises in how they gelled together.

“This is the song that almost got me into tears after we made it because of the two distinct vibes between what Kayla is saying and what I am saying. How those come together beautifully still leaves me speechless and that song instantly became my favourite song.

“I am super proud of this project and super grateful for this moment.  A lot of things are shifting, I even had my parents call me talking about hearing Last Call on the radio. Knowing that they too can listen to my music is a clear indication of the shift because these are really old school Zambian parents who would always advocate for less swear words,” he said laughing.

“But this project has more music. It was made with that purpose, and I believe it has something for everyone. It’s great to see that everyone is finding their own nugget in this project and that makes me super happy. I just want to keep the momentum going,” he said.
