Lavi$h’s “Big Mistake” EP Celebrates His Victorious Beginning
LAVI$H’s debut EP release is what one would deem as a victory start. Yes, after all that the young creative has been through, being bullied for making music his way – finally releasing a body of work that expresses who he is is a victory lap of some sort.
A total of seven tracks complete his first ever release dubbed You Made A Big Mistake, which was coined after his focus record Big Mistake.
“Big Mistake is inspired by where I’m from, my city. It is kind-of-a statement that says ‘you will regret this one later’ type of thing – seeing as I was bullied for making my music and it was a really bad time of my life,” he said.
But through all that, music remained an integral and important part of his life, never stopping.
“Music allows me to be who I want to be, authentically. Making music in Winnipeg, I couldn’t really express myself and for the longest time I couldn’t make the music that I really wanted to. But moving to Toronto, I realized that I am accepted here and I can do whatever it is that I want,” he said.
“The most difficult part about making music there wasn’t the making of the music. Being in the studio was bliss because I felt like the studio was safe. I had a makeshift studio in my parent’s basement where I was living. It wasn’t hard making the music but it got hard and emotional when I released the music or a record leaked.
“That’s where the negativity started, with people saying this and that,” adding that his type of music that he made didn’t conform to the norms of that city. Winnipeg is a European white folk type of city. So being a minority, being a black man from Africa and making rap records or rap RnB records, they won’t perceive it as their own music. They want to hear Country or Folk or Metal. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been listening to that type of music forever, it’s just not what I was making.”
LAVI$H was born in Zambia’s Lusaka before immigrating to Winnipeg. When the music calling was too loud to ignore, he moved to Torronto five years ago in pursuit of this longing.
In his authentic voice, he recorded the project that took a year and half to complete. Through that journey he was also a journey of finding his own sound and through that an impressive EP was born.
“The themes you’ll definitely find are love, life and all the good things, and seeing that we are getting a lot of negative records nowadays, this makes for a refreshing listen. Not to say that I don’t say any negative things in my music, but the majority of the body of work is positive. But I still have some things I need to let off still,” he said laughing.
When LAVI$H moved from Winnipeg to Toronto, that move was meant to be for a week but stayed longer.
“It was a leap of faith that I took and five and half years later, I am still there. A lot of the songs opened me up to a new side of myself, and what really pushed me was Trizz, my manager, and CHUBBS. Their guidance has really brought me confidence and also it puts our foot in the door in terms of artistry – bringing quality bodies of work, ” he said.
The seven tracks were recorded between Toronto and Los Angeles, admitting that there were songs that didn’t make the cut.
“The first moment that I said that title, it stuck. We never changed it to anything because it relates to a lot of us on the team. A lot of us proved people wrong through this body of work.
“We just didn’t want to leave any room for error and any room for comparison between the songs. Everything had to be perfect because we were taking such a big jump and making a bold statement. If there was criticism, and thank God there hasn’t been thus far,
The seven tracks on the EP are:
* World In My Hands
*Big Mistake
*Always You
*We Make Sense
*Seventeen
*Piano Man
