Mr JazziQ Brings the Streets to Amapiano With New Single, “KATALIA”

South African multiplatinum-selling artist and Amapiano heavyweight Mr JazziQ, will team up with Thesiix, Don Deeya, Magwe and Shazz RSA for “KATALIA”, an upcoming Amapiano single released through ONErpm and set to bring together the genre’s evolving sound, South African’s street culture and the country’s vibrant stance car movement.

The record will introduce a playful but deliberate concept centered on a woman named KATALIA, a figure who is loved, recognized and popular in the streets, while extending the name into the language of stance culture, where a standout modified car can also be referred to as a “KATALIA.” For Mr JazziQ, whose career spans the formative years of Amapiano with JazziDisciples through solo releases, cultural platforms, podcasting and nightlife, the collaboration will continue his exploration of the genre beyond the dancefloor, connecting music with the culture, identity and lifestyle that surround it.

At the center of “KATALIA” will be Bujwa, the Amapiano subgenre pioneered by Thesiix, giving the record its own rhythmic identity while separating it from the more familiar Amapiano formula. The song was inspired by “Macarena” by Los Del Rio, after Don Deeya heard the song following Spain’s World Cup victory and began thinking about how its melodic idea could be brought back home and interpreted through a South African lens. The record will mark an uncommon creative move for the artists involved, built around an interpolation while creating something distinctly connected to the streets.

For Mr JazziQ, who emerged as one of Amapiano’s key early architects through JazziDisciples before establishing his solo career, “KATALIA” will represent another extension of his willingness to explore the genre from different angles. The release will also form part of his growing entrepreneurial ventures, including Vibez in Main and Stance Social, alongside an active live schedule across the region.

“‘KATALIA’ is about the streets and the energy around them. The idea started with this girl who is known and loved in the streets, and then we connected that idea to the stance car culture. When someone posts their car, they can say, ‘here’s my Katalia,’ so the name becomes bigger than just the song,” says Mr JazziQ.

The record will also represent a series of firsts across the collaboration. For Don Deeya, KATALIA will be his first released record featuring a female artist, while Shazz RSA will make her debut in released Bujwa music. For Thesiix, the record will mark his first Bujwa release featuring a female vocalist, while “KATALIA” will become Mr JazziQ’s first Bujwa release. The track came together naturally in the studio, with Don Deeya first developing the hook after reconnecting with the melody, before Magwe joined the record. Shazz later arrived at the session, where the decision to introduce a softer vocal texture helped shape the final record.

“Don heard the beat and remembered the melody he had previously recorded after hearing the original after the World Cup game. Tried it on the mic and once done with the hook, Magwe jumped on the song,” says Mr JazziQ.

“KATALIA” will also extend into the world of Stance Social, Mr JazziQ’s event built around stance cars and the culture surrounding them. The next edition is set to take place in Johannesburg on 7 November 2026, creating a direct connection between the record’s central concept and the community that has helped shape part of its identity.

“KATALIA” will be a record built around recognition, reinterpretation and identity. By taking inspiration from a globally familiar melody and reframing it through Bujwa, Amapiano and South African street culture, Mr JazziQ and his collaborators will turn a simple name into a wider cultural reference. The single will demonstrate Amapiano’s ability to absorb outside influences and reshape them into something that belongs to its own world.
