Jokes On The Queen Of Bling: An Inside Look Into The Comedy Central Roast of Khanyi Mbau

This past Monday night, DStv subscribers bore witness to the undisputed queen of bling as she made Comedy Central history by being the first Young, Famous and African to be roasted in the latest edition of the Comedy Central Roast special.

The Comedy Central Roast of Khanyi Mbau, recorded last month at the Teatro at Montecasino in Fourways in Johannesburg, aired on Comedy Central (DStv 122) on Monday night, 8 August at 21:00. The uncensored and uncut version will be released on Showmax on 15 August.

The panellists giving Khanyi Mbau and each other a roasting are controversial podcaster Sol Phenduka, actor Sello Maake Ka Ncube, hip-hop artists Nadia Nakai, comedian John Vlismas, actor Celeste Ntuli, radio presenter Selby SelBeyonce Mkhize, broadcaster Tbo Touch, rapper YoungstaCPT and investigative journalist Devi Sankaree Govender, with Mpho Popps Modikoane as the roastmaster.

Seasoned comedian Loyiso Gola, took to Twitter to celebrate his achievement of being tasked to be at the forefront of the writing team who composed the jokes that were for and against the panel. Keeping the spirit of respect in the light-hearted jabs, some jokes that were written into the scripts were taken out because there was a consensus that they crossed a line that it went beyond a line.

Taking the time to reflect on the roast with media outlets Khanyi expressed her disappointment in the predictability of the spectacle while being humbled by how she was celebrated through the best medicine known to man, laughter.

“To be honest, I expected more creativity. There weren’t any surprising jabs. It was everything I expected people would touch on, but they went there. I didn’t get a line that made me feel uncomfortable or that stuck with me. People will really be surprised by Devi, she did an amazing job. Nadia Nakai was very funny and Celeste Ntuli shone. But Nadia is an interesting one that people will enjoy.” Shares Mbau.

If the sold-out event is anything to go by, it bears testament to how much south Africans needed a good laugh after a gut-wrenching and fatal pandemic. Who better to sparkle glamour into our funny bones than the queen of bling herself.
