Get to Know Dan Duminy, the Rising Pop Sensation Mending Hearts While Making Art

For rising South African singer-songwriter Dan Duminy, feeling, translation of emotion, and connection are the tenets that form the foundation of his version of pop music. In a world that chases virality and skims the surface of heart matters for short and digestible content, Duminy represents an avante-garde that still cares about reaching the soul and not shying away from talking about the hard things that are better off swept under the carpet. His music represents a man still finding his way around while also helping others in their own journeys.

Duminy spoke about how the diversity of growing up in Mzansi shaped his artistry, his approach to making music, as well as learning how to make music a tool to help other people and also an outlet to channel and process his own emotions.

“Growing up in South Africa gave me a lot of perspective. You’re exposed to so many different people, cultures, and experiences, and I think that naturally finds its way into the music I make. Music also became a way for me to process things I didn’t always know how to put into words. It gave me a place to be completely honest, and over time, I realised that was something I wanted to share with other people too,” he said.

Although a pop star at his core, the pop star talked about realising his true potential, who he is with the mic, and expressing the true version of himself without staying stagnant as an artist.

“I’m a pop artist at heart, and I love creating music that’s melodic and catchy but still has real emotion behind it. I’ve had some amazing moments in my career already, from getting number ones on South African radio to seeing people connect with my music in ways I never expected. But I honestly feel like I’m only getting started. I’m becoming more intentional with the music I release, the stories I tell, and the kind of artist I want to be long term. I’m less interested in trying to fit into a particular box and more interested in building something that genuinely represents me,” Duminy said.

Appreciating the art of translating personal experiences into songs that can appeal to common and universal experiences, Duminy cited his musical influences. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Justin Bieber and Post Malone, the singer praised his influences while also admitting that he wished his music could have the same emotional impact and heartfelt resonance.

“Justin Bieber has definitely been a big influence on me, especially in terms of how he’s grown as an artist and evolved his sound over the years. I’ve always admired his ability to make records that feel current while still being personal. I’m also inspired by artists like The Kid LAROI and Post Malone because they bring so much emotion and honesty into pop music while still making records that people can really connect with.

“From a songwriting perspective, I have a huge appreciation for people who can take a very specific feeling or experience and turn it into something that feels universal. That’s what I love about songwriting. You can write about something that happened to you personally, but someone on the other side of the world can hear it and feel like you wrote it for them. That connection is what I’m always chasing,” he said.

Duminy spoke about what mattered most to him as far as making music was concerned and what he wishes to be remembered for when everything is said and done.

“I want to be known for making music that people genuinely feel something through. Whether someone is going through heartbreak, falling in love, struggling with themselves, or just trying to get through a difficult season of life, I want my music to be something they can turn to. I also want to show that being a South African artist doesn’t mean you have to limit your vision. I’m incredibly proud of where I come from, but I’ve always dreamed of making music that connects with people globally. Beyond the music itself, I want to be remembered as someone who stayed true to himself, treated people well, and used the opportunities he was given for something bigger than just himself,” he said.

When not recording, Dan spoke about what mattered to him.

“Honestly, I enjoy the simple things just as much as the bigger moments. I love working out, playing soccer, spending time with the people close to me, and getting out of the house to experience life outside the studio. I’m also someone who spends a lot of time thinking, probably more than I should sometimes!

“My faith is an important part of my life too, and I’ve been learning how to slow down, be more present, and not let my entire identity revolve around my career. I love music, obviously, but I think having a life outside of it is important because those experiences are often what give you something meaningful to write about in the first place,” he said.

Duminy shared his vision for the future he envisioned for himself.

“I see myself making music on a global level, performing for people all over the world, and having a catalogue of songs that people can come back to years later and still connect with. I want to keep growing creatively and reach a point where I can take risks with my music without feeling like I have to prove myself to anyone. But outside of that, I want a good life. I want a strong relationship with God, a loving family, good people around me, and the freedom to enjoy the things I’m working so hard for. I think it’s easy to get caught up in chasing the next milestone, and I never want to reach a point where I’ve achieved everything I dreamed of professionally but lost sight of what actually matters. For me, success is being able to look at my life and know that I stayed true to myself along the way,” he said.
