A modern-day, proudly South African movie, ‘Angeliena’, has made its mark as a multi award-winning survival story. Shot during the second wave of Covid when the film industry was at a standstill, Towerkop Creations, the Fish Hoek based production company which has been specialising in female driven heroine stories, took up the challenge and birthed the feel good movie roping in a star studded cast with the likes of Euodia Samson, Tshamano Sebe, Colin Moss, Thapelo Mokoena, Nicole Madell, Marciel Hopkins, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Sandra Prinsloo, Toya Delazy and the late Kuli Roberts.

 

 

Written, produced and directed by the acclaimed, multi-award-winning South African filmmaker, Uga Carlini, ‘Angeliena’ garnered 7 nominations for the prestigious AMMAs which took place recently in Lagos, Nigeria, bagging a win for Best Make Up Design. The Africa Movie Academy Awards, popularly known as AMAA, is presented annually to recognise excellence among professionals working in, or non-African professionals who have contributed to, the African film industry.

  1. Best Director – Uga Carlini
  2. Best First-Time Fiction Director – Uga Carlini
  3. Best Film Produced – Uga Carlini & Dumi Gumbi. Executive producers Erik Toft, Anton Nel, Rudolf Buitendach, Faizal Cader & Khulekani Dlamini, DTIC & NFVF. Consulting producers Himesh Kar & Vlokkie Gordon
  4. Best Supporting Actor – Tshamano Sebe for his role as Mr. Majaba
  5. Best Lead Actress – Euodia Samson in the title role of Angeliena
  6. Best Editing – Rudolf Buitendach
  7. Best Makeup Design – Morag Steyn (WON)

 

The nod from the AMMAs rounds up the momentous awards and nominations run for ‘Angeliena’ – having received two SAFTA nominations for Best Achievement In Original Music/Score – Feature Film for composer Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and Best-Supporting Actor for Tshamano Sebe as Mr. Majaba, taking the WIN for the latter. Angelina was also a selected film at the African International Film Festival “AFRIFF”, which took place on the 12th of November 2022, in Lagos, Nigeria in addition to Uga Carlini being nominated for Best Screenplay at the Writer’s Guild of South Africa’s Muse Awards for ‘Angeliena’.
