Muzz Afrika Enters a New Creative Chapter with New Album, “OWN KING”

Singer-songwriter, producer, composer, bassist and creative entrepreneur, Muzz Afrika, formerly Edgar Muzah (SAMA winning musician, worked with the likes of Ami Faku, Nathi Mankayi, Amanda Black, Blaq Diamond, Nomcebo Zikode, MXO, Ntsika, Putuma, Willis Wataffi, Ringo Madlingozi and Phila Madlingozi among others) has released his new album, OWN KING, through It Sounds Fresh. An eight-track project shaped by approximately two years of personal growth and artistic exploration, the album reflects an artist rediscovering his creative freedom and finding new ways to express his identity through music. Across the album, themes of self-worth, healing, celebration and collective success come together in a project built around one central idea, knowing who you are and having the confidence to own your journey.

Leading the project is “ENERGY”, a vibrant, accessible Muzz Pop record that introduces the sound and spirit of this new chapter. Built around the experience of being drawn to someone and choosing to embrace the feeling without resistance or overthinking, the single captures the excitement of allowing yourself to be affected by another person’s presence. Its celebratory approach reflects Muzz’s renewed enjoyment of making music, marking a shift towards a broader sound while retaining the identity that defines his artistry. The song also emerged unexpectedly during a recording session intended for a different track, reflecting the organic creative process that shaped much of OWN KING.

“ENERGY represents the confidence, freedom and positivity I want people to feel through my music,” says Muzz Afrika. “I am having fun with my music again. I want people to feel good and not think for a few minutes. Feel the energy of the song and make it personal to their own stories.”

For Muzz Afrika, OWN KING represents a significant development from his previous work, Son Of A Tribe. While that project remains an important part of his story, the new album gives him room to explore his artistry without being confined by existing expectations. The roots of his musical identity remain present, but his approach is more open to experimentation, accessible melodies and different forms of expression. Rather than entering the studio with something to prove, Muzz Afrika allowed himself to follow the music, drawing from personal reflection, conversations and moments of joy. The result is a body of work that documents both his development as an artist and his renewed appreciation for the creative process.

“OWN KING is not about being above anyone. It is about knowing who you are, owning your journey and being brave enough to become the best version of yourself,” he explains. “I genuinely believe this project was given to me; my job was to be humble enough to receive it.”

Across its eight tracks, OWN KING moves through different expressions of self-awareness, from claiming one’s identity to recognizing personal progress and making room for joy. Opening with “CORONATION”, the album establishes the moment Muzz Afrika steps forward to claim his own path. “CELEBRATE” builds on that sense of arrival, encouraging listeners to acknowledge how far they have come and give themselves permission to enjoy the present. “HEALER” reflects his belief in music’s ability to offer light and reassurance, while “ENERGY” introduces the confidence and freedom that characterize this new phase of his career.

The album’s reflections on self-worth become more personal on “DURA”, which draws its meaning from the traditional granary used to store harvested crops for nourishment and future planting. For Muzz Afrika, the image represents the importance of understanding what one already possesses internally. When you know your granary is full, you do not have to accept less than you deserve out of fear of running out. The song encourages listeners to recognize their own value and make decisions from a place of confidence rather than scarcity.

That understanding of personal worth extends into the album’s wider perspective on success. On “THIS ONE”, Muzz Afrika challenges the idea that achievement must be competitive, expressing his preference for collective progress over individual triumph. The song is built around the belief that there is enough opportunity for everyone and that celebrating with the people around you is more meaningful than succeeding alone. Meanwhile, “HUYA” explores the intensity of romantic attraction and the longing to be close to someone who is difficult to resist. Through repeated invitations for a lover to come closer and expressions of devotion, the song captures the excitement of desire and the feeling of wanting that person alone. Closing the album, “LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL” offers a reminder to let go of what continues to cause pain, practice gratitude and recognize the value of being alive.

Although the songs explore different experiences, positivity remains the connecting thread throughout OWN KING. Muzz Afrika deliberately avoided building the album around sadness, choosing instead to create music that could encourage people through difficult periods without losing sight of life’s beauty. From the healing possibilities of “HEALER” to the shared victories celebrated on “THIS ONE”, each track offers a different entry point into the album’s broader message of hope.

“I want people to feel hope,” says Muzz Afrika. “I want someone to hear a song and feel seen, encouraged or simply happy to be alive. Life can be heavy, but there is still so much worth celebrating. If OWN KING helps someone believe in themselves again, then the music has done its job.”

With OWN KING, Muzz Afrika presents a project that brings his personal development and musical evolution into focus.
