Women on the Move: Connie Chiume launches global programme that will empower the arts business

Veteran actress mama Connie Chiume, who has been active within the entertainment industry for close to 50 years now, recently launched a global connecting initiative dubbed the Essence of South Africa programme, which is launched through her Connie Chiume Foundation (CCF).

This initiative, described as a celebration of culture, unity, and empowerment, was launched at this year’s Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans and is supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the City of New Orleans.

Speaking to Chiume, the 71-year-old was moved to  kickstart the initiative that not only places South Africa at the forefront of showcasing our rich talent within the arts industry but shares that she envisioned a space that promotes diversity, cultural exchange, and encourages empowerment within the arts business.

Chiume adds that beyond the immediate showcase, the bigger dream is to establish The Essence of South Africa as a transformative force in the arts.

“We envision a global movement that celebrates and preserves cultural heritage while embracing innovation and creative evolution. We aspire to create a legacy that empowers artists, builds bridges between nations, and inspires a more inclusive, united world,” she said.

The genesis lay in the founder’s deep passion for promoting cultural exchange and empowerment for all art forms.

“The rich tapestry of South African culture and its unique voices inspired The Connie Chiume Foundation to launch a platform that celebrates diversity, fosters understanding, and paves the way for collaborations.

“We were motivated after numerous international festivals, particularly in the United States, approached me to assist them in coordinating South African musicians, dancers, crafters, filmmakers, visual artists, and cuisine for their participation in various festival. This experience inspired the conception of the Essence of South Africa initiative. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to showcasing the true essence of South Africa and its artistic prowess to a global audience,” she said.

Using her rick industry knowledge, Chiume has always been actively seeking out avenues to empower young creatives from hosting thespians masterclasses to this groundbreaking launch. This initiative is an extension of all the work she has been doing.

Essence of South Africa is described as a dynamic movement, a vibrant showcase, and an empowering program all rolled into one.

“It’s a movement that aims to bridge cultures and create lasting connections. As a showcase, it brings together the best South African arts and culture internationally. And as a program, it seeks to empower women in arts and culture by providing them with insights, networking opportunities, and a platform for collaboration.

“We aim to create lasting connections between cultures and promoting understanding through the arts. We also strongly believe in fostering collaborations that go beyond borders and empower women within the arts and culture business. This entails providing them with platforms, networks, and knowledge-sharing opportunities, ensuring their voices and contributions are recognized.”

The Essence of South Africa initiative is encompassed by a series of events and engagements that will unfold between the year 2023 and 2024, having begun with its Stakeholder Engagement and Seminar.

Moving forward, the Stakeholder Engagements will be succeeded by captivating African Film screening and theatre showcases, and a celebration of South African dance culture. The duration, she believes, will provide ample time for attendees to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and artistic expressions of South Africa.

“Despite the issue of progress, there are ample challenges that still persist for women within the arts industry that still need improving on. There’s a need for more equitable representation in leadership roles, fair compensation, and opportunities for professional growth. mentorship programmes, policies that promote gender equality, and platforms like ‘The Essence of South Africa’ that amplify their voices are vital for addressing these issues.

“Our desire for the South African arts industry is to see it flourish as a dynamic and inclusive space. We envision an industry where diversity is celebrated, emerging talents are nurtured, and women play pivotal roles across all sectors. We hope to witness collaborations that transcend cultural boundaries and contribute to South Africa’s recognition as a global cultural hub,” added mama Chiume.

To participate, be on the lookout for the national call-out that will be initiated, inviting individuals interested by submitting their work. Further details will be provided as the event approaches, and the Foundation will specify the categories that will be included in the 2024 edition.

“We encourage artists to connect with us through our platforms, share their work, and express their interest in being part of the showcase. We aim to provide opportunities for emerging and established artists alike to be part of this cultural exchange and empowerment journey,” she said.
