Tshego Koke humbled by his first SAFTA win, a stamp of approval that his work is been seen

Winning a SAFTA for Tshego Koke is more than just receiving a gong but a stamp of approval of the six years that he’s been playing within the entertainment industry.

This win is also testament that one’s past or their start/ beginning doesn’t matter but it is the dedication to the craft that does. Koke, who is also a first time winner, walked away with the coveted Most Popular TV Presenter Award, triumphing over nine other spectacular presenters like Katlego Moabe, Denver Vraagom, Lorna Maseko and Thato Molamu.

“I always thought that my hard work was only noticed by me alone and I am probably the only person cheering for me. I never really had the OG status attached to my craft, regardless of the number of years of being in the industry. But now, the award puts so much emphasis on ‘you’ve been doing it’ and that my formula has been working all along,” he said excitedly over a call.

Koke shares that over the years he hasn’t looked to diversify within the industry, taking the predictable route of DJ’ing or music because his sole purpose of joining the industry was for DJ’ing.

Not forgetting where he comes from and the people that have always rooted for him have been the foundations that have kept him grounded.

“I knew coming into this industry that I have a legion of predecessors who have been growing in their own ways and right. I knew I had to find my own path, living in my own lane and just harnessing my craft. I literally stood in my craft with conviction, regardless of the expectation of changing lanes. I knew why I came into the industry. I am not looking to become a DJ or actor. My dream was always focused and channeled here and I think that is what has kept me improving and working extremely hard,” he said.

Koke, believe it or not, was a fitness trainer before the much desired opportunity presented itself to audition for the VJ search in 2017 where he came up on top.

“I was at a gig when the announcement was made and when I found out about the win, I remember how I sat down for a good 30 minutes digesting the news. I was nominated against people who are so great within the industry and when you look at my type of presenting and the shows that I do, you’d never think these are shows that are being watched by people on a SAFTAs panel.

“The nomination alone was just a huge revelation to me, so the win was a huge surprise. Knowing that my work is being seen, I’ve been in awe of what one’s work can ultimately produce,” he said excitedly.

The 17th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) were held at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg, returning after years of being hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre and Sun City.

The evening marked a triumphant one for the MultiChoice group, scooping a total of 45 awards last Saturday.

The night was also filled with beautiful looks. Click on the Previdar link to see.
