Thuso Mbedu Wins Hollywood Critics Association Award

The good news just keeps coming for KwaZulu Natal-born star Thuso Mbedu. Last night, at the Hollywood Critics Association TV awards, the actress walked away with the TV Breakout Star Award for her role as Cora in The Underground Railroad.

Thuso, who was recently seen gracing the cover of W Magazine, announced her win through social media, thanking everyone involved in her journey.  

“Thank you very much to the Hollywood Critics Association for this special recognition. The Underground Railroad has been an amazing journey from start to finish. I could not have asked for a better introduction to storytelling on this side of the world. I am truly honored. Truly. Thank you to every single person who has walked this journey with me. You’re loved by me. Forever ❤️,” she wrote.

Thuso bagged her award alongside other winners like MJ Rodriguez from POSE, who won Best Actress in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Drama and Anya Taylor-Joy from The Queen’s Gambit, who won Best Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Movie.

In The Underground Railroad, which is directed by Barry Jenkins and produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B imprint, Thuso leads as Cora Randall, an enslaved girl on a quest to freedom. Thuso has been praised for her role by people like Oprah Winfrey who said “she gives the performance of a lifetime”.

The actress has been nominated for a Black Reel Award in the Outstanding Actress Category as well as for the 2021 TCA Awards in the Individual Achievement In Drama category which was won by Regina King last year.
