State Finally Concludes Its Case in the Senzo Meyiwa Trial After Years

After three long years in court, the State has rested its case in the trial behind the murder of former Bafana Bafana goalie and captain Senzo Meyiwa, with the prosecutors concluding their work at the High Court in Pretoria on the 24th of July 2025.

Caught up in legal tugs-of-war, delays and the setbacks of missing evidence over the years, the high-profile case has experienced various ups and downs, with the most significant one hitting the trial in July 2023, when Judge Ratha Mokgoathleng replaced Tshifhiwa Maumela in presiding over the affair, effectively rebooting the matter that seeks to pass a verdict concerning the 2014 shooting in Vosloruus.

Advocate George Baloyi, the state prosecutor, formally wrapped up the State’s cause, saying, “That concludes the leading of the evidence for the state, and we close the state’s case. It’s been three years since the state started leading evidence,” he said.

As for the crew of the five accused of being involved in the killing, the group is still in custody. On the 23rd of July 2025, Correctional Services issued a statement dispelling claims of alleged torture at the hands of officials raised by accused #5, Fisokuhle Ntuli, who held up proceedings on Tuesday, 22nd of July, by refusing to come out of his cell. The trial also hemorrhaged a day on Tuesday when one of the other accused, Mthobisi Mncube, refused to comply with going along with the case because of the discomfort he felt from the irons of the shackles on his legs.

With that State now having done its part, all eyes will be on the defense, who are at liberty, as per the freedom given by the State, to call up witnesses while also giving the group of the five accused a chance to testify and speak their minds. This is expected to commence in the coming weeks.

This is a developing story.
