South Africa’s latest export, actress Thuso Mbedu, has bagged a new international award.

The SAFTA award recipient added another accolade to her name when she won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Performance in a Scripted Series on Sunday, 6 March.

Her career-defining portrayal of Cora Randall in Berry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad earned her her first international awards in 2021 for TV Breakout Star at the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards and Outstanding Performance award in a New Year Series at the Gotham Awards.

Mbedu accepted her award at the ceremony held in Santa Monica, California, sporting a Dior couture peplum-style pantsuit. In an Instagram post, she expressed her gratitude and thanked the Film Independent, Colson Whitehead, Barry Jenkins, and Amazon Studios. ‘Thank you to everyone involved in creating this timeless work of art,’ she added.

The 30-year-old is currently shooting a Gina Prince-Bythewood directed historical epic titled The Woman King alongside Viola Davis and John Boyega. She will be joined on the cast by fellow South Africans former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, actress Makgotso M and Siv Ngesi. The movie will be released in September.
