Songø Release Tsibiri, A Playful Summer Amapiano Single With A Nod To Childhood Memories
Songø is a Pan-African and European four-piece ensemble that has fast been making waves on the French tour circuit. The group is fronted by Eastern Cape-born and UK-based Sisanda Myataza who sings and raps in Xhosa, English, and French, and is backed by band members Burkina Faso-born Petit Piment and French Yoann Minkoff and Mael Loeiz Danion who collectively have performed with some of France’s most established Reggae and electronic outfits.
Songø’s new single TSIBIRI is an upbeat Amapiano track sung in Xhosa. The track cleverly combines organic and electronic instruments: layers of keyboards and samples bring a spooky cinematographic atmosphere while the bongos alongside the kick drum and a very percussive bassline.
“Tsibiri is a game that we used to play as kids, it’s accompanied by a little dance as you sing and then you swap partners and so on,” recalls Sisanda who grew up in Umthatha. “I wanted to use the fun element of childhood games to create something that everyone across the globe could sing along to.”
