Shocking ‘Colourism’ Video from SABC 2’s Morning Live Resurfaces
A disturbing clip from SABC 2’s Morning Live ignited debate surrounding colourism when it resurfaced this week
In the video, Simphiwe Ncongwana, a presenter at the show, appears to be using colourist language while rounding up an interview with make-up artist Karabo Nkuna and artist Portia Hlongwane.
“Ladies, we thank you so much for your time and well done for so beautifully depicting and representing both narratives that dark skin is beautiful and light skin is much more beautiful,” he concluded, as images like the one below appeared on screen.

Even though the video was posted on 15 August 2020, its resurfacing seems to have sparked further outrage and dispute amongst online users.
Colourism debates and discussions are frequent topics on Twitter where they usually center around light skin privilege, beauty standards, Afrophobia or skin bleaching. The term defines the prejudice that exists among people based on skin colour, where lighter skinned individuals are often favoured over dark-skinned individuals. It can exist across racial groups, including in Indian and Coloured communities. Celebrities like Pearl Thusi, Sho Madjozi and Beyoncé are usually at the center of these discussion when light skin privilege is brought up.
Of course, tweeps weighed in on the presenter’s remarks, with some expressing dismay and others stating that it may have been a mistake on the presenter’s part.
