Ronald Lamola Commends Inmate Class of 2022 for Outstanding Matric Results

The inmate class of 2022 has notched up its pass rate by 10.5%, pushing it up to 87.5% from a 77% pass rate in 2021.

These results were announced by Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola on Monday at the St. Albans Correctional Facility in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.

It was also revealed that the matriculated inmates also fared better than the National Senior Certificate pupils of 2022 countrywide, achieving 7.4% more from the end-of-year examinations. “They have performed very well with an improvement of about 10.5%,” said Ronald Lamola in a virtual interview on eNCA.

A total of 203 inmates wrote their final matric papers, of which 202 of those inmates passed. A total of 122 obtained bachelor passes while 56 did enough to score a diploma pass.

Lamola commented on the positives of the inmates’ achievements, highlighting how the results were a good investment for the future of the inmates and the communities they were due to be released to after doing their time.

“It is a great improvement. It is showing that our work to encourage them to study and work very hard is bearing fruit, which we believe is a good investment for society. It will enable them when they are released to be people of productive value in the economy or society in whatever that they may want to choose so that they don’t go back to their re-offending behaviour,” said Lamola.

On Twitter, Lamola further expanded on the results in a post saying,: “In the Department of Correctional Services, our full-time schools achieved an impressive 95.9% matric pass rate, whereas part-time schools registered 63.3%.”
