The South African music industry continues to mourn the loss of Yolanda “Yallunder” Nyembezi, who passed away at the age of 30. She had been battling an illness and sadly succumbed on March 13, 2025, at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.

In a heartfelt statement, Yallunder’s family confirmed her passing, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of their beloved daughter, sister, and friend.

“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Yolanda Nyembezi, known to many as Yallunder. She was a rare soul, possessing both immense talent and a warm, kind spirit. Her presence lit up every space, and her voice touched countless hearts. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy will live on through her music and the memories she left behind,” said the statement.

The family also acknowledged her resilience in facing her health struggles and requested privacy as they grieve, stating that details regarding her memorial service and funeral will be shared in due time.

Yallunder was born on August 23, 1994, in Bizana, Eastern Cape. A classically trained vocalist, she excelled in vocal pedagogy, graduating with top honors. Her journey into the spotlight began in 2018, when she gained recognition for her powerful covers. This led to collaborations with major artists such as Sjava and Black Coffee, cementing her place in the industry.

In 2020, she joined 1020 Cartel and contributed to the label’s compilation album, iSambulo, where she showcased her signature emotive sound. Her debut solo project, Uthando Lwam, further highlighted her ability to merge storytelling with deeply rooted African musical influences.

Her talent did not go unnoticed. In 2023, she earned a South African Music Awards (SAMA) award for Best Remix after Mörda reworked her song “Ndinovalo”. This recognition was a testament to her growing influence and the impact of her artistry.
