Queen of Popiano Tyla Is Now a Two-Time Grammy Award Winner

Going two for two at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, South African global star Tyla won her second Grammy for her hit single “PUSH 2 START”, from the deluxe cut of her debut self-titled disc. The queen of popiano was nominated once again for the Best African Music Performance category, the same one she emerged victorious in back in 2024 for her internationally acclaimed smash hit, “Water”.

The “Bliss” hitmaker was up against tight competition for this year’s race, being pitted against superstars such as Burna Boy (“Love”), Ayra Starr and Wizkid (“Gimme Dat”), Davido and Omah Lay (“With You”) as well as Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin (“Hope & Love”).

A multi-genre blend of amapiano, pop, R&B as well as reggae music, “PUSH 2 START” was accompanied by a sultry carwash-themed music video, which garnered praise for its levity, summer vibes, as well as its early Y2K atmosphere conjuring up ghosts of Rihanna’s single “Shut Up and Drive.”

“It just shows me how far we can take it; you know what I mean? Being from where I am from, it means we have a chance. And that’s just amazing,” she said, during a post-award interview with Billboard since she wasn’t able to do her acceptance speech on stage.

The song “PUSH 2 START” was a commercial success, peaking at #88 on the Billboard 100 chart, her second single to break into the chart, with the first one being her top ten hit “Water”. In addition, the song also claimed a RIAA certification, moving at least half a million units in the United States alone.

On top of the success “PUSH 2 START” collected during its initial run, it found a second wind on the waves when a remix with Jamaican icon Sean Paul was released on Valentines Day last year. A month later, Tyla also got her first directorial credit by virtue of co-directing the visuals of the remix alongside Taylor Fauntleroy.
