Q Twins win big at the Basadi in Music Awards right as they gear up for their EP release
Viggy and Virginia Qwabe, popularly known as the Q Twins, walked away as one of the biggest winners at this year’s Basadi in Music Awards that took place this past weekend. The duo earned themselves the Most Streamed Song between April 2022 and March 2023 award and the Best Duo/Collaboration of the Year gong, making this a night to remember.
The twins, unable to contain their excitement, recall when their names were called out to receive each award, how they never expected a win and therefore were overwhelmed with gratitude with every award presented to them.
“We just went there to honour the invitation that was sent our way and to support such a powerful awards ceremony that is dedicated to women, because we are huge fans of anything that has to do with women. So when our names were called out, my legs were stuck,” said Viggy laughing.
The twins were introduced to Mzansi in 2019 during the South African Idols’ season 15 competition, and since then life has never been the same again. They duo have released two albums thus far, with their 2022 release topping charts and further cementing their stance as vocal giants within the industry.
With so much to celebrate, the pair will be releasing a five track EP that features the likes of Azana and Nobuhle – adding that the songs they have chosen for this body of work are songs that will continue to touch lives, just like they have been doing these past years.
Music for the pair started at an early age, with stories of their cries mimicking the sound of music cropping up from their mother and how they used to compose church music that would leave adults amazed within the Zion denomination.
“For us, music can be described as an itch that can only be scratched when we continue to make music. So we don’t produce music for the fun of it, although it is fun, but we are called for it. This is evident in how we dream of the songs that we produce, how we wake up with songs and melodies, and how we find ourselves recording music on a daily because music is part of us. It’s an extension of who we are,” said Virginia.
In their four years of music, the Qwabe twins have bagged themselves various accolades which include winning at the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) in the Best Female Artist/Group and Best Traditional Collaboration Song categories in 2021 and have also received accolades for Double Platinum and Gold selling artists and the Most streamed song for Sobonana.
And even with all this success before them, Viggy and Virginia are simple girls, and love visiting their homestead in KwaZulu Natal where they find their rejuvenation and anchor.
And while building an impressive career like theirs in such a short space of time has significantly improved life for the pair, achieving their childhood dreams of touching lives through music has been the pinnacle of all the achievements.
With a mentor such as DJ Tiro, who they hail as a kind-hearted and patient genius, they are now looking forward to grinding harder with hopes that they will one day walk the Grammy stage.
“We have proved to ourselves how powerful and gifted we are on a daily basis. What we have achieved in such a short space of time, against all odds, is proof that when something is for you, no one can stand against it.
“We just hope that one can look at our journey and realise that anything is possible, with hard work and belief attached to it,” said Viggy.
