Early in 2023, Msaki announced she was stepping away from the stage, citing burnout and a desire to recalibrate. She had grown disillusioned with the demands of the industry and needed space to connect with her gift in a way that felt authentic and fulfilling. Her final performance, at the National Arts Festival, felt like a full-circle moment—a pause rather than a conclusion. But even in her rest, Msaki’s artistic spirit refused to be silenced, and the idea for one more performance began to take shape. Camagu in Symphony is that performance—a grand, celebratory thank you to the fans, collaborators, and industry partners who have walked beside her throughout her career.

“It’s been 10 years! I want to say thank you. The support and love from all those who stood by me did not go unnoticed, even during the challenging times. I look back at that with gratitude. I don’t know what the future holds, but I want to close this chapter by saying Camagu—a deep, heartfelt thank you to my supporters, my partners in the arts, my collaborators, my friends, and my incredible family,” expresses Msaki.

The concert will bring together an eclectic mix of orchestral, acoustic, and electronic sounds—a musical convergence where Msaki’s diverse influences collide. Think BBC Proms meets Ultra Music Festival, a once-in-a-lifetime event that promises to evoke emotion and stir the soul. The evening will feature performances of Msaki’s greatest hits from her career, spanning her debut EP Nalithemba, the critically acclaimed album Zaneliza, and her genre-defying collaborations with dance music giants. But this isn’t just a retrospective—it’s a living, breathing celebration of Msaki’s creative evolution, with fresh arrangements and orchestral interpretations of her most beloved songs.

One of the most poignant aspects of this concert is the symbolic title, Camagu—a Xhosa term that conveys gratitude and a sense of acceptance for what is unfolding. For Msaki, this event represents more than just a musical milestone; it is an opportunity to reflect on her career’s ups and downs, the successes, the disappointments, the healing, and the community that has surrounded her. “Camagu in Symphony is my love letter to this journey and the people who have been a part of it,” she says. “It’s about honouring the dream that I’ve had for myself, and now, finally, seeing it come to fruition in this incredible way.”

Msaki is no stranger to grand, collaborative musical experiences. She has worked with orchestras, brass bands, choirs, and some of South Africa’s most respected artists across genres. But Camagu in Symphony is her most ambitious project to date, bringing together the full scope of her musical world—blending acoustic folk, electronic dance, amapiano, and orchestral symphonies in a way that only she can. The audience will be encouraged to arrive dressed in Tuxes and Takkies, embracing the event’s swanky, sophisticated vibe while staying ready to dance when the energy shifts.

This concert is more than just a performance; it’s a cultural moment. It’s a testament to Msaki’s incredible decade-long journey as an artist, composer, mentor, and collaborator. Featuring a star-studded lineup of friends and collaborators, including Sun-El Musician, Black Motion, TRESOR, Simmy, Nduduzo Makhathini, and more, the concert will be a collective celebration of South African music, creativity, and community. The event also serves as a space for Msaki to take her place at the forefront of contemporary South African music, not just as a performer but as a composer and visionary whose work has shaped and defined the landscape.
