“May His Legacy Continue to Inspire and Uplift Aspiring Actors”: South Africa Mourns the Passing of Actor Mpho Sebeng

South Africa continues to reel in disbelief and sadness after the confirmation of the unfortunate death of actor and thespian Mpho Sebeng.

A product of Soweto, the 31-year-old actor was tragically involved in a car accident on the 5th of May 2024 in Potchefstroom, which claimed his life. The family released a media statement on Sunday, confirming the news.

“The family of the South African entertainer, Mpho Sebeng are saddened to confirm to the public and media that their son has indeed passed away.


“Mpho met his untimely death in the early hours of Sunday, 05 May 2024 due to a tragic car accident in Potchefstroom.

“Whilst the family appreciates the immense outpouring of love and condolences, the family requests some space to process the news.

“Details of his home going celebrations will be communicated in due course and we request that you continue to hold the Sebeng family in your prayers.

“Take care of yourself and take care of each other.

“The Sebeng Family Spokesperson,” the media release read.



The celebrated entertainer had a two-decade long career which started at the tender age of 12. Sebeng’s first role within the television space was on “Justice for All” as well as “Zero Tolerance”. His career saw him grace the spaces of eTV’s Scandal, the screenplayBay of Plenty, and Winnie, His first major role, as a lead came from Ring of Lies, which eventually earned him a SAFTA Award nomination for Best Male Actor in a Telenovela in 2018.

His sudden passing came as a shock, as South African flocked Twitter to express their love and valedictory messages to the late actor.

One of South Africa’s leading political giants, the EFF, tweeted: “The EFF is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Thespian, Mpho Sebeng. We honour his memory and celebrate the profound impact he has left on South African television and cinema. May his legacy continue to inspire and uplift aspiring actors for years to come.”


DJ Sbu shared a video of his conversation with Mpho, which he captioned: “The power of kindness: A message for Young People – Mpho Sebeng.”


Mbuyiseni Ndlozi tweeted: “Truly sad to hear of the untimely passing of Mpho Sebeng. May the family be comforted. I’m lost for words.”
