It’s Wafa Wafa Time – Winner Takes All! One Ultimate Fan Stands A Chance To Win R1 Million
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) and MTN launched the 2022/23 MTN8 tournament on Monday 22 August 2022, under the theme, It’s Wafa Wafa Time – Winner Takes All!
Now in its 15th year, the MTN8 tournament pits the top eight teams from the previous DStv Premiership against each other to determine the champions that will walk away with the R8 million prize and the coveted MTN8 trophy.
MTN customers, football fans and communities remain an integral part of the campaign and tournament with the share of R8 million in prizes that is up for grabs through the recharge and win competition that will be active for the duration of the tournament.
The teams participating in this year’s tournament include four from the coast and four from in-land. For the opening match, on Saturday 27 August, Cape Town City, will play host to Amazulu who have never tasted the glory of Wafa Wafa. The second match is between first timers – Royal AM and Orlando Pirates who have clinched the trophy three times before.
On Sunday 28 August, Stellenbosch FC, another new team competing for the prestigious MTN8 trophy will take on Kaizer Chiefs, who have won it twice before. The last match of the quarterfinal will see the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns take on SuperSport United.

They are encouraged to go to the stadiums in numbers as there are nice surprises in store for them”.
In line with the spirit of Wafa Wafa – Winner Takes All! The MTN8 Last Fan Standing “recharge and win” competition for consumers and football fans will see one lucky winner walk away with the life-changing prize of R1 million. Participants are encouraged to enter the competition by dialling *144 *8# to opt-in, buy a bundle or recharge with R10 or more to stand a chance to win a share of R8 million in prizes.
Journalists remain key to the success of the MTN8 tournament and through the Last Journalist Standing competition they also stand a chance to win R80 000 cash prize and the Last Journalist Standing title.
MTN will again roll out charitable initiatives aligned to this year’s MTN8 tournament. Through the flagship CSI element known as Goals for Charity, MTN is pledging R20 000 per goal scored in regulation time during the tournament. All proceeds raised will be donated to charity post the tournament.
Through the MTN8 Legacy Programme, this year MTN will donate Dream Bags, which consist of football-playing kits, to schools to assist budding soccer players in communities.
For this year’s campaign, MTN announced eight football legends who will partner with them to encourage customers and football fans to participate in activities that have been lined up. These include:

- Tyren Arendse
- Brilliant Khuzwayo
- Morgan Gould
- Hlompho Kekana
These football legends are an extension of MTN8 tournament and will be critical in spreading the Wafa Wafa message and engaging with the public during the tournament.
In addition, these legends will also be a part of the Last Legend Standing initiative which will see them battle it out, Wafa Wafa style, for the grand prize that will be ploughed back into communities.
Other exciting activities will be brought to life through MTNs digital platforms such as Wafa Wafa 18 Area which will include interesting football quizzes and the match predictor on the MTN8 ayoba channel, driving the rivalry and the passion as well as some football-related content on MTN FC.
