Former Vice President David Mabuza Passes Away After Short Illness

Former deputy president of South Africa and ANC stalwart David Mabuza has passed away at aged 64. News of the of the politician’s sad departure made waves last evening, when the public was informed that Mabuza had taken his last breath in hospital in Mpumalanga, his province of birth.

While specifics have not been publicised, family spokesperson Desmond Moela – in an interview with Sowetan Live – revealed that the nature of Mabuza’s death was occasioned by respiratory complications, with the former vice president of the country succumbing to the ailment upon being admitted.

“He suddenly passed away while still in emergency room with doctors who were assisting to stabilise him. As a husband, father, brother, and pillar of strength in the Mabuza family, he will be dearly missed for his love, care and dedication to the wellbeing of his family and all those close to him,” Moela said.

David Mabuza served as deputy president of South Africa from February 2018 to February 2023, before being succeeded by Paul Mashatile. Mabuza also served as a member of the National Assembly during the same time period. Prior to his ascension, he’d taken up the mantle as the Premier of Mpumalanga from May 2009 to February 2018.

Outside his political pursuits, Mabuza founded the DD Mabuza Foundation in 2014, geared towards the educational and social empowerment of vulnerable members of society such as children, child-headed households, elderly people and those living with disability.

Mabuza is survived by his wife and children.
