DJ Ntokzin’s EP compilation ‘Makubenjalo’ attests to his growth in music

Mzansi’s amapiano DJ and producer Ntokzin has grown. The proof is in his latest EP release Makubenjalo, which he says has been well received by many thus far.  The title, which means “Let it be so”, is inspired by the idea of living in the moment and not having regrets, shares Ntokzin – real name Ntokozo Rarane.

“Life’s too short for that, right? I wanted the title to capture the essence of the EP, which is all about celebrating life as it comes.”

The 24-year-old who hails from Vosloorus, in the East of Johannesburg, shares that since the EP’s release the reception has exceeded his expectations.

“It’s been a joy to see how the music has touched so many hearts. The messages and feedback have been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s incredibly gratifying to know that the music has had such a positive impact.”

Talk us through the creation of your EP “Makubenjalo”

The creation of ‘Makubenjalo’ was a profoundly inspiring journey. This 7-track EP is a celebration of my growth and experiences as a musician, seamlessly blending the soulful elements of Amapiano and House. The inspiration for this project came from various facets of life – personal experiences, encounters with different cultures, and the beauty of embracing the present moment.

I had the privilege of collaborating with some incredibly talented artists who lent their voices and creativity to this project, including Malumnator, Russel Zuma, Mcfowlene, Mashudu, Basetsana, Bontle RSA, 2woshort, Mkeyz, SoulfulG, Ice 50, and Sia Mzizi. The collaborative spirit added depth and diversity to the EP, making it a true musical journey. It took us a good amount of time, but every moment was filled with passion and dedication. We wanted to create something special, and I believe we did.

When did you know that music is the career path that you wanted to take?

You know, music has always been a big part of my life. I started feeling the pull towards it back in my teenage years. It’s like music chose me, and I couldn’t resist its call. The journey has been a mix of challenges and amazing experiences, and I’m really grateful for all the support that got me here.

How did your first album do?

My inaugural album, a collaborative effort with DeMthuda, achieved remarkable success, making a profound impact on my career. It was a groundbreaking moment when the album clinched the title of “Best Amapiano Album of the Year” at the South African Amapiano Awards in 2021. This recognition validated the dedication and hard work that went into its creation.

Since being in the entertainment industry, how have you grown?
The entertainment industry has been a transformative experience, marked by growth on both artistic and personal fronts. It’s been a journey filled with countless lessons, challenges, and triumphs. In this ever-evolving landscape, staying relevant has been a constant challenge, but it’s through these challenges that I’ve unearthed my true potential. I’ve learned to adapt, innovate, and wholeheartedly embrace change.

Being actively involved in every facet of the industry, from production to marketing, has been an empowering experience, albeit demanding.

Collaborations, too, have been both enriching and challenging, requiring the delicate art of merging diverse creative visions. This journey continues, offering new experiences and challenges, and I’m excited to see where it leads me next, knowing that each challenge is a stepping stone toward a brighter artistic future.
