Deadly Duo The Incredibles Have Their Minds Set on Bringing Back the Sound of Gqom
Once a formidable force in the industry and a signature soundtrack of the Durban lifestyle, Gqom has been simmering in the shadows, making a quiet comeback as one of the country’s hottest things. Representing this gradual resurgence is burgeoning duo The Incredibles, who are on a quest to not only bring the sound back but to do it with a Jozi twist.
Adam Dee of The Incredibles spoke about the early days of the pair, way before they became a musical act, and the life changes that influenced the eventual decision to go into music-making.
“The Incredibles are childhood friends who also grew up together. Our journey began in high school, before Tyson relocated to Johannesburg to pursue his acting dreams and I followed him to study film and TV production. Then I broke into the event space where I started MCing, which took off.
“Then after a while, we realised that as people who are always in the club, we never really heard the music of where we came from ever played. Music that is true to us. We saw a gap in that and decided to explore being DJs of Gqom music. I came up with the name, and we both vibed to it. The rest is history,” one half of the Incredibles said.

He talked about the importance of being in alignment and keeping company that wants to see them grow as artists, while also looking back at all the challenges of trying to break into the industry.
“The transition has been quite good and dope, especially when we look at where we are right now. You know when you have a vision in the beginning, not everyone will see it and that in itself presents a set of challenges that come from people not believing in you. You find a lot of gatekeeping and then politics of the game interfering. But we chose people who chose us and with God working mysteriously, we somehow met all those people, people that aligned with us,” Adam said.
In addition to promoters and venue owners who believed in them, The Incredibles shared some of the people who have been a stablising presence in them defining themselves and finding their feet.
“Family has been very important to us because before we even got to the point of where we are right now, including friends we are very close with. That’s besides the teams we work with in pushing our brand. Other people who have been instrumental in our journey, people in the industry have been the DJ Tira and NaakMusiQ. Naak has been important because he has been very open with us and unafraid of spitting out game,” Adam said.
The duo spoke about what they got up to if they weren’t on stage shredding it for the crowds as The Incredibles.
“With me, since I’m in the event space, you’ll find me hosting events. If I’m not, I’m probably hanging out with my boys. And because I’m also qualified in production and editing, I’m involved in work they do as well on that level,” said Adam.

Tyson shared his own view on the idea of what life is like outside music.
“For me, it’s also about spending time with the boys and doing everything together and being united in everything we do. Because when we are all in alignment, we get to do things because of a common goal and vision. If I’m not with my boys, I’m exploring acting since that’s also my thing,” he said.
Tyson of the duo shared The Incredibles’ greatest vision for the future.
“We see ourselves taking over the world, in terms of our music and in our respective strengths as a duo. With our eyes on growth, it’s all about how we can maximise our individual capabilities and putting them together so we can grow each other, and I believe that everything will eventually come together,” Tyson said.
