Controversy, Conversation & Blxckie Magic Take Center Stage At This Years MTV Base Hottest Mcs 2023
The panel has spoken, the verdict has been concluded and the heavy-handed gavel of the hip-hop fraternity has struck! Just under three days ago MTV Base hosted their polarizing annual show “Base Hottest MCs”. From its infancy when all the criteria points were equally weighed to the years when the show dwindle into a popularity contest devoid of the full consideration of Bars, Impact, Intangibles, Sales (and streams) and the ex-factor, the show’s credibility has come into question.
The discourse of credibility was in the context of the choice of panellists, many members of the South African hip-hop believe community felt the panellist was made of individuals who aren’t fully InTouch with the culture in the most proactive manner, hence why they tend to miss when naming the top 10 MCs of the year, a point up for continued debate until the next year of assessment.
This year, MTV Base TV personality Tshego Koke, gathered around with French Frym, Kyeezi, Misa Narrates, Uncle Partytime, Mars Ambrosio and Fif Laaa. This year’s panellist gathered a very provocative list of MCs and named the 23-year-old KZN native, Sihle Sithole, professionally known as Blxckie, the hottest MC of 2022, earning him the number one spot on the list.
Many MTV Base viewers shared their thoughts on social media each more fierce than the next from rappers such as Big Zulu and Lucasraps being excluded from the list (a conspiracy pointing towards label payola allegations), to others feeling Thato Saul and Tyson Sybateli should have been included in the top ten conversations and as always, the slimes came in full force to speak up and question why the young king, A-Reece should have been ranked higher.
Blxckie has enjoyed an incredible year of success. From his platinum status certifications ranging from
- Double Platinum Award For “Kwenzekile”
- Platinum Award For “Ye ×4”
- Platinum Award: “Big Time Sh’lappa”
- Platinum Award: “Hold
- Gold Award: “Sika”
- Gold Award: “David”
- Gold Award: “Joy” Gol
- Double Platinum Award: “Umoya”
- Gold Award: “Cold”.
- Gold Award: “B4now Deluxe”
To being Apple Music’s Up Next artist, garnering SAHHA nominations and becoming one of the most sought after cross over artists of the year, dominating the pop and amapiano cultural texture has warranted the well-earned number one position, but will Blxckie be able to win the coveted number one position next year? Time will tell, for now, congratulations somnyama.
