Artist Collective Celebrate Halloween with the Release of Their Debut Album MODERN HORROR

Born from a 2022 collaborative writing camp at Sound Foundry Studios, Modern Horror is a cross-genre collective of South African writers, producers, and vocalists pushing dance music into bold, emotive spaces. Hot-swapping between rooms, laptops, and booths, the crew shaped a distinct palette that blends club energy with songwriting depth.

Out today, the eight-track album MODERN HORROR is the output of contributions from Mpho.wav, Kenza, Hollow Scene, Bakai, Jabulile Majola, Valley Sixteen, Orah, Bravcat, and LUFS, resulting in a listening experience that pulls from various worlds, to create one for late nights and long drives.

Focus track:

“Mother’s Name” — Modern Horror, Mpho.wav & Jabulile Majola

As the opening track, “Mother’s Name” sets the tone for the record. Rising Afro-Folk voice Jabulile Majola reflects on adopting his birth mother’s name as an artist moniker, using music as a tool for self-discovery and embodiment. Mpho.wav’s classic, unhurried groove anchors the track, inviting listeners into the album’s warm, introspective world while keeping feet firmly on the dancefloor.

The album covers a spectrum of South African House flavours, from deep and percussive to melodic and vocal-led with a through-line of human stories inside rhythm-forward production.
