Hot off the heels of Cape Town’s regional qualifier earlier this month, the Amapiano Dance Championship is hitting the road, from Joburg to Durban, Bloemfontein, and Gqeberha, leading up to the grand National Championship Weekender in September 2025.

Spearheaded by theatre director and dance sensation Elvis Sibeko, this championship is more than just a competition—it’s a movement.

The Amapiano Dance Championship will celebrate not only the artistic innovation of South Africa’s youth but also the continuing evolution of its dance culture. The event is focused on offering opportunities to dancers from the townships, providing them with exposure to the theatre environment and training that is often out of reach.

“This event goes beyond a simple dance competition, it is a community-driven project aimed at uplifting and empowering the youth,” says Sibeko.

All the participants will receive free Theatre Craft Workshops, valued at R25,000. The workshop will cover key skills in choreography, costume design, lighting design and sound engineering.

A star-studded panel of celebrity choreographers, seasoned dancers, and industry pros will serve as the judges. And for those aiming to take their careers to the next level, scouts from film companies, talent agencies, and private investors will be on the lookout for standout talent.

The stakes are high with a grand prize of R50,000 up for grabs and awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places across the Soloist, Duo/Trio, and Group categories! Plus, most Promising Talent award will spotlight dancers who show incredible potential.

In 2026, the championship is set to expand internationally, further promoting South Africa’s vibrant Amapiano dance culture on a global stage.
