A Glimpse Of A Golden Horse Racing Affair – What To Expect At The 2022 Betway Summer Cup
The Turffontein racecourse will come alive this Saturday as Johannesburg’s most prestigious horse racing event, the 2022 Betway Summer Cup, returns.
The race is themed ‘The Golden Summer’ – an ode to the City of Gold, prompting attendees to come adorned in the lustrous colour, to enjoy what is Joburg’s prestigious sporting event.
Supported by various brands such as Betway, the Johannesburg Tourism, DStv’s Supersport and SABC Sport the Betway Summer Cup is a combination of the finest in horse racing with an awesome day out.
And while the focus is on the thrilling horse races, the event will also feature fascinating fashion and entertainment for the whole family. There is something for everyone at the People’s Race.

World class, exhilarating horse racing
A front-row seat of the Turffontein track means that you will have the best view of the horse racing action. This year, the coveted Summer Cup title race will see stakes of R2.5 million in prize money on the line.
With nineteen runners carded to go to post for the golden cup for the coveted Grade 1 race over 2000m, there is no doubt 9-time Summer Cup winning trainer Mike De Kock has the strongest hand in the race, with his splendid horses Sparkling Water, Safe Passage, Aragosta and MK’s Pride taking their place in the field, with the first trio currently occupying the first three spots on the betting boards.
The half-time show: a breathtaking entertainment experience by Lady Zamar
Award-winning pop songstress Lady Zamar will take the half-time show by storm and her electrifying performance will set the scene for the last race of the day. The Betway Summer Cup is the only race day to feature a half-time show. Taking inspiration from the NFL, the show brings together a colourful blend of performers to dial up the thrills just before the main race.
The fan-favorite Summer Garden
The famed and all-time favorite Golden Summer Garden will stick to its fun-filled, laid-back experience offering. Located right alongside the lush green race track, with a close up view of the horse track finish line and the thudding of hooves, the outdoor garden-themed party brings horse racing, food and entertainment together. Popular vendors at the Summer Garden include Strip Cheez and Black Chef Gourmet Burgers.
The Voguish Marquee
The famous Voguish Marquee is the Betway’s Summer Cup’s soirée for kings and queens. The epitome of an infusion of fashion, racing, food, luxury, and entertainment, the marquee is an array of lifestyle events like no other. This year, artist performances include South African DJ, producer, media personality and businesswoman, Dj Zinhle, and songstress and songwriter, Boohle.
Moments wine pop-up
A glorious occasion deserves a drink to go with it. Hence, Gauteng’s most prestigious horse racing event will exclusively feature Moments Merlot wine. Owned and curated by media personality and actress, Mbalenhle Mavimbela, the merlot will add the cherry on top to the event.
