“He Thought South Africans Forgot”: South Africans In Savage Mode Over the Cancellation of Burna Boy’s Jo’Burg Concert

Afrobeats megastar Damini “Burna Boy” Ogulu will no longer be touching down on South African shores for his I Told Them show.

Having recently released his acclaimed seventh studio album I Told Them… last month, Damini was set to rock on the 23rd of September at the FNB Stadium, which packs a capacity of 90 000 people. The Johannesburg show has since been called off, with the Ticketpro website plastering the online banner of the artist’s show with the word “Cancelled” in all caps.

The Grammy-winning star recently filled up the GelreDome Arnhem Stadium, a 41 000 seater in the Netherlands, for a Love, Damini concert.

“Sadly, it is with great regret that we must inform you that, despite my team’s effort, the show in Johannesburg on Sept 23rd will be cancelled due to inability of promoters to fulfill their contractual, financial, production and technical obligation,” said Spaceship Management on the developments.

Although technical and logistical issues were cited as the primary reasons for the sudden cancellation, Mzansi folks were of a different mind, as they took to X to express their thoughts.

Some felt that it had everything to do with the bitter taste left in people’s mouths resulting from the bad blood between him and late rapper AKA.

@NginguSah posted a screenshot of an X post remarking on how much an impact Burna Boy’s feelings towards AKA would have on the sale of his tickets, while @ISephara posted: “Meet Burna Boy, the 1st ‘international artist’ in history to sell only 2% of tickets for a concert. Worst ticket sale ever. In his derangement, he thought South Africans forgot he lied about SA being xenophobic & said we are running around beating up Nigerians on several occasions.”
