“It’s a Very Weird Burger”: Mzansi Loves Uncle Waffles, But the Burger? Not So Much

The streets have been abuzz about Uncle Waffles, and Mzansi has its fair share to say about the latest Uncle Waffles burger in collaboration with chicken fast food chain KFC.

The Uncle Waffles burger was initially available exclusively from 8 to 18 December at Kentucky Town, Durban. The burger has gone on to be sold to the general public from 29 August 2023 at selected KFC stores countrywide.

The one-of-a-kind collaboration saw KFC team up with the BET Award-nominated DJ, with the fast food outlet launching a waffle-based burger with a fillet serving as a patty coated in 11 herbs and spices, a slice of cheese, and maple chipotle sauce.

Since the burger’s launch, Mzansi has been talking, with most reviews being negative, citing the meal’s clashing flavours and qualities. And while not all has been bad, the good hasn’t been prevalent and strong enough to come to the burger’s rescue.

@Mlu__N2 tweeted a viral TikTok video of @Reabetswemoloto.5 in which she spits out the burger in disgust with the caption: “This burger should be sold in another country, not here in South Africa.”

SAMA-award-winning music video director Ofentse Mwase, tweeting from @unclecscrooch, remarked in a video that “It’s weird, guys. It’s a very weird burger.” While he didn’t pan it, he gave props to the sauce.

Content creator @chiefkiller_rsa had a humorous take on the burger, citing that what made the burger taste better was thinking of Uncle Waffles and playing her music.
