Banyana Banyana To Face AWCON Hosts Morocco In Tournament’s Final At Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah

South Africa’s women national football team Banyana Banyana extended their winning streak in the WAFCON tournament following a victory against fellow Southern African club, Zambia. Banyana defeated Zambia and advanced to the WAFCON semi-final, while simultaneously securing their spot in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in New Zealand. A ruling in the South Africans’ favour by the video assistant referee (VAR) came to the club’s rescue, awarding them a late penalty to beat Zambia 1-0 at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, Morocco on July 18.

Jermaine Seoposenwe is the player who was brought down by Zambian defender Martha Tembo, inside the penalty area. Linda Motlhalo scored the penalty deep in added time awarded by Ethiopian referee Lidya Tafesse Abebe. This resulted in Banyana Banyana reaching their sixth WAFCON final, where they will aim to go one better than their five previous runners-up finishes.

Banyana will now face the tournament’s hosts Morocco, who made it to the final after edging defending champions Nigeria. The WAFCON final will be held at Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat on Saturday at 11 PM, Central African Time.
