Veteran Gospel Singer, Dr. Deborah Fraser, Breathes Her Last at 56
The venerable gospel musician, Dr. Deborah Fraser, passed away at 56. The sad news comes after recent health complications, which rendered the beloved star hospitalized. The family confirmed the tragic loss of the KwaMashu-born icon via a media release through the artist’s verified Facebook page.
According to the page, the venerated star passed away on Sunday, 15 May 2022, after midday, graced by the presence of her family and friends. Apart from the knowledge that her death came as a result of a short illness at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, intimate details of Dr. Fraser’s passing have been kept confidential. The family, also through the succinct statement, has asked for space and respect as they deal with the news.
The multi-award-winning artist began her fruitful and inspiring career in the 1980s as a backing singer for an iconic roster of artists such as Lucky Dube, Hugh Masekela, Brenda Fassie, and Grammy-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Her efforts eventually culminated in the release of her debut solo offering in 2000, Abanye Bayombona, which moved over a million units. She went on to release many more albums, including Umqhele, Udlalile Ngabantu, and Akanqotshwa, which was her last to be released in 2019. Accolades she has garnered throughout her career include the South African Music Awards and the SABC Crown Gospel Awards. The Christian Leadership Academy also honoured her with a Doctor of Philosophy in Sacred Music.
The vocalist leaves behind a legacy of memorable albums and songs that have left countless South Africans ministered to and close to God.
