Black Coffee Snags His First Grammy Award

Black Coffee has made history and is now officially a Grammy Award-winning artist. The South African DJ won the Best Dance/Electronic Album award for his seventh studio album, Subconsciously. This makes him the first South African to win a prize in this category.

Accompanied by his son Esona, Black Coffee delivered a brief yet heartwarming acceptance speech. “I want to thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world, to heal souls and help people go through whatever they are going through in life. Thank you to my fans around the world for believing in me. I want to thank my family and my children.”

Black Coffee has enjoyed one of the most organic and steady ascents in the music industry. Debuting in 2005, Nkosinathi Maphumulo made a name for himself on home soil, raking up multiple SAMA and Metro awards throughout his career. International acclaim found him in 2015 when he won a DJ Award and again in 2017. He also has a BET Award for Best International Act: Africa, which he scooped up in 2016.

During a post-win interview, Black Coffee pointed out how he created the album with the intention of international recognition. “It was intentional to create an album that would be recognised on this level. Being someone who comes from South Africa or Africa, where most of our artists are categorised together, so, I was very intentional with what I wanted to do with this album where it would compete on a global scale with people that I think of as my peers,” he said. Indeed his intention was met with success as he was up against internationally acclaimed names in dance and electronic music like Marshmello and Major Lazor.

Congratulations, Black Coffee! Keep flying the South African flag high.
