Retired music mogul, Nota Nhlamulo Baloyi, features on the latest cover of Moziak Magazine where they unpack why he has taken on the self-appointed role as “The Authority”.
Known on social media as a highly opinionated and at times controversial personality, Nota is adamant that he has taken on the much-needed role of leadership to the benefit of the music industry, particularly that of SA Hip Hop.
In a sit-down interview with Vth Season’s Benza who features as a Guest Editor at Moziak Magazine this month, Nota takes us on his journey from childhood, to reaping rewards in the industry, to retiring and paying it forward. Nota also makes an urgent call to women in the music industry to take on roles of mentorship and to uplift and guide the next generation of industry women who are largely unsupported.
As a culture leader in the media landscape, Moziak Magazine emphasises: “At a time when African Culture and Music is on everyone’s radar it is an optimal time to listen to radical and disrupting voices. Someone like Nota with such a polarising viral voice in the industry needed a deeper look.”
Benza adds: “This is not the first time African music has been in the spotlight. This time we have to do things differently for the longevity of the industry and to the benefit of African creators for a lifetime and more.”
“Leadership is about someone taking responsibility, so I thought this hip hop community I have contributed so much to I want it to grow, flourish and be able to contribute to the well-being of other people’s lives other than myself, it has done so much for me,” shares Nota on why he is “The Authority”.
Nota adds that the mic is a powerful black-consciousness tool and will not allow anyone under his watch to misuse it.
