Media personality Unathi Nkayi has found herself at the centre of controversy following reports that she was arrested during a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) drunk-driving operation earlier this month.
According to reports published over the weekend, the incident allegedly took place on 16 May in Robindale, Johannesburg, where officers had set up a roadblock operation targeting drunk driving and traffic-related offences. Police reportedly stopped Unathi’s vehicle during the operation before opening a case related to driving under the influence. Reports further claim that she was briefly detained before later being released on bail pending further investigation.

The situation quickly escalated beyond the alleged drunk-driving case itself after reports surfaced of a heated altercation between Unathi and JMPD officers at the scene. According to the Sunday Times, tensions reportedly rose when police attempted to search her vehicle, with the radio personality allegedly refusing permission while exchanging words with officers during the stop.
The matter has since become even more complicated after Unathi reportedly opened a crimen injuria case against a female JMPD officer, accusing the officer of verbally insulting and swearing at her during the interaction. The exchange has sparked widespread conversation online, with social media users debating everything from police conduct during roadside operations to the public scrutiny celebrities face when involved in legal matters.
At this stage, no conviction or formal ruling has been announced against Unathi. Reports indicate that authorities are still awaiting the results of blood alcohol testing, which could play a significant role in determining whether the matter proceeds further in court. The case had also reportedly not yet been formally enrolled on the Randburg Magistrate’s Court roll at the time the story gained traction online.
