BEN SEPTEMBER EXPANDS HIS AFRO-R&B SIGNATURE, COMMANDING THE RHYTHM ON “SAMBA”

Sound innovator, Ben September returns with a renewed sense of movement and musical expression on his latest single, “Samba”, a vibrant Afro-influenced R&B release exploring love, miscommunication, and emotional intention. The track signals a subtle but deliberate shift in his sonic direction, pairing his established emotional depth with a more rhythmic, vibrant energy that expands the scope of his artistry.

At its core, “Samba” is a song about love complicated by miscommunication. It navigates the quiet tension between intention and perception, capturing the experience of knowing how you feel about someone but struggling to express it in a way they fully understand. Through this lens, Ben explores themes of patience, vulnerability, and the emotional work required to bridge that gap.

“’Samba’ is about trying to love someone in your own way, even when it’s not always received like that,” Ben explains. “It’s about intention, effort, and the vulnerability that comes with putting your feelings out there.”

Musically, the track sits at the intersection of contemporary R&B and Afro-inspired rhythms, anchored by a strong samba influence.

It is upbeat and percussive, built around a sense of motion that drives the song forward from start to finish. While the production leans into lightness and energy, it remains intentional, allowing the emotional undercurrent to stay intact without being overshadowed by the rhythm. The song introduces a more playful and expressive dimension to Ben’s sound.

The creative process behind “Samba” began not with lyrics, but with feeling. The rhythm of the beat served as the entry point, shaping the direction of the song organically. Rather than forcing a narrative, Ben allowed himself to respond intuitively to the music, letting the structure and emotion unfold naturally. The track also incorporates elements of vernacular language, adding another layer of identity and authenticity, though this presented its own challenges during the writing process.

“The process started with the feeling of the beat,” he says. “Once that energy was there, everything else followed. It was about letting the song take shape on its own.”

One of the main challenges in “Samba” was balancing its upbeat energy with emotional depth. Ben approached this carefully to ensure the track stayed grounded in his artistic identity. Writing in his mother tongue also pushed him creatively, requiring precision and persistence before he arrived at a version that felt authentic.

“Having to write in my mother tongue was a bit of a challenge too but I got it right after a few attempts.”

Hailing from the Vaal, Ben September continues to position himself as part of a new generation of artists redefining the boundaries of Afro-influenced R&B. His work remains rooted in emotional honesty, drawing from lived experience and real conversations, while gradually expanding into more dynamic and expressive sonic territories.

With “Samba”, Ben September offers more than a standalone single, it serves as a preview of his upcoming EP and the wider creative direction he is building. The track marks the start of a larger rollout that will continue to shape his evolving sound and storytelling approach, standing as both a progression and a statement of intent.
