Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Lays Criminal Charges Against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu Following Scandalous Press Briefing
KZN Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi caused a weekend-long uproar with an explosive press briefing. Clad in SAPS Special Task Force regalia and flanked by gun-toting colleagues in matching uniforms, Mkhwanazi laid bare the woes of corruption in the interconnected spheres of politics and law enforcements, from revealing alleged attempts by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to covertly shut down the division responsible for political killings to organised crime cartels getting away with murder countless times with the help of prominent politicians and higher-ups. Stepping it up a notch, Mkhwanazi began the week by laying official charges against Mchunu.
News of the development surfaced on the 7th of July 2025, and the charges Mkhwanazi has laid against Mchunu are directly related to Mchunu’s supposed clandestine attempts to dissolve the political killings task team division.
A snippet of Mkhwanazi’s briefing:
The current Police Minister issued a statement the day before concerning Mkhwanazi’s accusations. In his measured and deliberate statement, Mchunu seemingly doesn’t deny the allegations directly by addressing them one after the other. He does, however, call Mkhwanazi’s testimony “baseless” and calls out Mkhwanazi for “insinuations made without evidence or due processes”.
“The Minister of Police will never allow his integrity, that of the Ministry or the SAPS at large to be undermined by the insinuations made without evidence or due processes, from anyone, including Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi. We will be reviewing the Provincial Commissioner’s statements and consider appropriate action,” the statement said from the Minister of Police.
Similarly, South African Head of State Cyril Ramaphosa responded to the briefing held by the KZN Provincial Commissioner. However, his response was that of diplomacy, calling on urgency in dealing with the matter while also charging all parties involved to “exercise discipline and restraint” in an effort to defuse what has already detonated.

“This is a matter of grave national security concern that is receiving the highest priority attention. It is vital that the integrity of the country’s security services is safeguarded and that the rule of law is affirmed.
“All parties to this matter are called upon to exercise discipline and restraint. The trading of accusations and counter-accusations threatens to undermine public confidence and sow confusion,” the president said in his statement.
This is a developing story.
